Good sleep, central to normal wakeful functioning, impacts everything we do.

Most people have had some practical experience of the consequences of inadequate or disrupted sleep. Aside from the unpleasant feeling of inappropriate sleepiness, poor sleep results in impaired attention, judgment, memory, motor control, and emotional stability. Unfortunately, modern society seems to be designed to disrupt the restorative properties of sleep through such mechanisms as sleep deprivation, sleep disruption, and disturbance of the normal timing of sleep, known as circadian rhythm. It is likely that the electrification of human civilization has resulted in the disruption of sleep because now most people can stay up after sundown for either work or entertainment purposes. Modern lifestyles promote maladaptive sleep habits, frequently leading to insomnia complaints. Dysfunctional sleep has been linked to chronic weight gain with its attendant morbidities such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, degenerative arthritis, and sleep-disordered breathing. From a practical perspective, there is evidence that a sleep-deprived individual has cognitive and motor impairment comparable to someone with a blood alcohol level of 0.1 percent.

4BetterSleep Centers strives to optimize sleep for each patient by providing a comprehensive medical evaluation geared to improving sleep through education, appropriate testing, and targeted therapy. The company was founded twenty years ago by P. Terrence Moore, MD, FAASM, and Brian M. Ratzer, MS, LPC-A, RPSGT, REEGT, RST. Dr. Moore is double board-certified in Neurology and Sleep Medicine. He is also an EEG and EMG specialist with a book published on his background.

This allows him to better understand the effect sleep has on brain functioning and, conversely, how neurological disorders may affect quality sleep. In his nearly 40 years of practice experience, he has seen all manner of patients with problematic sleep. Mr. Ratzer is a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate with over 30 years’ of experience as an electroneurodiagnostic technologist.

4BetterSleep Centers has grown from a single two-bed lab into a 12-bed operation with 3 locations in Dallas, Heath, and Plano, Texas, performing both attended and in-home sleep diagnostic testing. The professionals and staff at 4BetterSleep Centers offer the latest in sleep therapy for all types of sleep-disordered breathing, narcolepsy, and insomnias. With a full-time DME department, 4BetterSleep Centers can provide any type of equipment that patients may need to treat sleep-disordered breathing while routinely following up on all patients to ensure that the therapy is going as expected and to troubleshoot any problems which may arise. Additionally, they have a skilled dentist devoted to sleep dentistry with considerable experience in using oral appliances to treat patients with obstructive sleep apnea where appropriate.

Treating insomnia focuses on nonpharmacological therapy such as paced breathing or devices such as Alpha Stim and the use of instrumental conditioning/neurofeedback when necessary. It is noteworthy that the 2017 American Academy of sleep medicine guidelines regarding the pharmacological treatment of insomnia classifies the available evidence for hypnotic medications as WEAK. “These recommendations are based on a systematic review of available randomized controlled trials of individual drugs, taking into consideration the quality of evidence, risk-benefit ratio, and patient preferences.

With over 20 years of experience in the field, 4BetterSleep Centers is a one-stop practice for persons with any kind of sleep difficulty

A STRONG recommendation is one that the clinician should, under most circumstances, follow, whereas a WEAK recommendation indicates a lower degree of certainty and the outcome and appropriateness of the patient-care strategy for all patients.”

The cornerstone of 4BetterSleep Centers treatment philosophy rests upon continuity of care while doing everything possible to optimize patient outcomes. Their long experience has shown that inadequate follow-up and education often result in treatment failure and worse patient outcomes. Their referral process is streamlined and simple, offering patient appointments in a timely manner while providing feedback and information needed to make the best healthcare decisions. 4BetterSleep enjoys relationships with clinicians of diverse specialties and backgrounds who entrust their patients to its care; all results and clinic notes are copied to referring physicians and/or primary care physicians in a timely manner.
