Luis Sequeira Fernandes, Dental Medicine Coordinator, Lusiadas Saude SA
Tweet

Recognizing Luis Fernandes’s extensive expertise in dental healthcare leadership and innovation at Lusíadas Saúde SA, this exclusive article offers valuable insights into delivering patient-centered care, building high-performing clinical teams and navigating industry transformation through strategic vision, emotional intelligence and technological advancement.

Building Clinical Excellence

My 18-year career in healthcare management spans diverse business models, providing valuable experience for my current role as Dental Medicine Coordinator at Lusíadas Saúde SA. I’ve consistently focused on medical best practices, efficient resource management, talent development and patient-centered care.

I began at Vitaldent in 2006 as Clinical Director, implementing innovative payment models to increase treatment accessibility. Later at Malo Clinic SA, I opened and coordinated the Malo Clinic Almada unit before advancing to regional director and joining the national clinical committee.

During the pandemic, I joined Lusíadas Saúde SA, bringing my entire team with me. I helped create the Lusíadas Dental brand in the beginning of 2021, establishing key partnerships and standardizing best practices. Our team has expanded to meet growing demand, with success driven by strong clinical protocols and a focus on patient well-being. Our achievements reflect both technical expertise and human compassion.

Our approach combines personalized care with technology to enhance experiences while delivering optimal outcomes. Comprehensive consultations assess clinical needs alongside patient preferences. Treatment plans align with personal health goals and financial considerations.

Digital integration provides visual diagnostics and convenient communication. Our multidisciplinary model enables specialists to collaborate, providing comprehensive care under one roof. Anxiety-reducing facility design includes natural lighting and noise reduction. Financial transparency ensures detailed costs and payment options before treatment.

Staff trained in emotional intelligence address patient discomfort. Continuous feedback collection identifies improvement opportunities. This approach yields higher treatment acceptance, better retention, increased referrals and improved outcomes as patients actively participate in their oral health.

Leading With Vision and Purpose

My experience reveals key challenges in managing modern dental healthcare amid transformation. The competitive marketplace demands differentiation through quality and technology rather than price, which risks compromising care. Implementing best practices requires robust quality systems to bridge research-practice gaps.

Talent acquisition has become challenging as professionals prioritize work-life balance. Creating attractive environments requires innovative compensation and advancement approaches. Technology adaptation presents significant operational and financial challenges, requiring careful evaluation of innovations that truly enhance outcomes versus those that merely increase costs.

Team management involves aligning diverse professionals while addressing individual aspirations. The emotional demands of patient care necessitate proactive wellness strategies to prevent burnout. Today’s informed patients expect superior clinical outcomes and service experiences, requiring fundamental shifts in delivery models. Successful navigation requires leadership balancing business acumen with clinical expertise and emotional intelligence.

At Lusíadas Saúde SA, we maintain technological currency through strategic innovation. Our evidence-based protocols provide guidelines while preserving clinical autonomy, supported by incentives that encourage professional development. Partnerships with leading manufacturers give us early access to innovations, particularly in digital diagnostics and minimally invasive methods. These relationships accelerate our technological integration across multiple domains.

Strategic acquisitions of established entities immediately incorporate specialized expertise into our organization, facilitating rapid knowledge transfer network-wide. Our centralized assessment framework evaluates innovations against evidencebased criteria, ensuring investments improve clinical outcomes and patient experiences. This approach has positioned Lusíadas Dental at the forefront of dental healthcare evolution.

My Kilimanjaro climb during a Peak Performance Leadership program fundamentally transformed my leadership approach. Between the icy cliffs and vast skies, I learned that true leadership isn’t about reaching the summit—it’s about making courageous choices, even when they diverge from your original goal.

The essential leadership qualities in dental healthcare include:

Adaptive Resilience – At 5,300 meters, my difficult decision to end my climb taught me that resilience means adapting intelligently to changing conditions, not pushing forward blindly.

Emotional Intelligence – Managing emotions under extreme mountain conditions mirrors the balance required when leading dental teams and treating anxious patients.

Strategic Planning – The meticulous preparation for Kilimanjaro parallels the detailed planning needed in practice management.

Decisive Action Under Pressure – Healthcare leaders must make difficult decisions daily—just as I did when recognizing my limitations on the mountain.

Passion with Compassion – Leading with both excellence and compassion creates an environment where dental teams thrive under pressure.

After 15 years leading my team, I’ve discovered leadership greatness lies not in summits reached, but in inspirational decision-making and positive impact. I return transformed—approaching leadership with renewed resilience and profound gratitude.
