Transforming Healthcare Through Compassionate, Trauma-Informed Counseling

Healthcare Business Review

Cristina Aguilar, LCPC Patient Care Manager, Esperanza Health Centers
Tweet

Cristina Aguilar ‘s journey began in Mexico City, where she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in clinical psychology from Universidad de las Américas. Early in her career, she demonstrated an enduring dedication to the emotional and psychological well-being of vulnerable populations through diverse internships that exposed her to psychiatric hospitals, community rehabilitation centers and juvenile care settings. Her specialization in Psycho-Oncology, completed at the National Cancer Institute (INCAN), marked a pivotal point in her trajectory. At INCAN and later at FUCAM A.C., she became instrumental in supporting patients facing one of life’s most profound challenges, cancer.

Her goals have always centered on building a career rooted in empathy and excellence. With over a decade of clinical and psycho-oncological experience, she consistently reflects her core values and knowledge through a blend of scientific rigor, emotional intelligence and cultural sensitivity that sets her apart as a leader redefining patient-centered mental health care.

Holistic Psycho-Oncological Care Rooted in Compassion

My work extended far beyond therapy sessions, including collaboration with oncologists, psychiatrists, and surgeons to develop holistic care plans that addressed not only physical symptoms but also the emotional and existential dimensions of cancer diagnoses. My focus was also on delivering family and caregiver support, bereavement counseling, and end-of-life care, which demonstrated my ability to provide comfort where medicine alone could not. It is important to say that in Mexico we do not have as many resources as we do in the US, which led me to seek services that could better benefit and support patients during their journey.

I would describe these experiences as a daily lesson in human resilience. With each patient encounter, I reaffirmed my belief that the best care arises from listening deeply, validating courage and empowering individuals to regain dignity in the face of suffering with every patient I treat and walk alongside.

Bridging Worlds: From Psycho-Oncology to Integrated Care Management

After years of clinical experience in Mexico, I traveled to Chicago to bring my expertise and compassion, where I continue to serve as a Bilingual Care Manager at Esperanza Health Center and as a Bilingual Mental Health Practitioner.

Mental health professionals are not just clinicians but advocates within the healthcare ecosystem.

In these roles, I once again recognized patients’ need for additional support and emphasized the vital role of care management in helping individuals navigate complex medical systems, often during vulnerable life stages. My bilingual abilities in Spanish and English have proven invaluable in bridging care gaps for underserved multicultural populations.

My daily work involves clinical assessment, crisis intervention and treatment planning, but what distinguishes my practice is the approach I bring to every patient and family member that I see. Each interaction is grounded in trauma-informed care, a philosophy that prioritizes safety, empowerment and collaboration.

I believe mental health professionals are not just clinicians but advocates within the healthcare ecosystem. Whether coordinating with physicians, helping patients access community resources or managing transitions after hospitalization, I champion the principle that mental wellness is inseparable from physical health. My collaborative approach has fostered trust among multidisciplinary teams and improved patient outcomes, particularly in value-based care settings that emphasize quality, empathy and long-term recovery.

Compassionate Advocacy in Multicultural Mental Health

Throughout my career, I’ve been recognized for my calm professionalism during crises. In both clinical settings and community health centers, I have intervened in countless high-risk situations with composure and empathy.

In every hospital corridor, counseling room and family meeting, a healthcare provider should not only be distinguished by knowledge but also by sensitivity, dignity and advocacy. Through my practice, I never forget that healing is not only about curing illness but also about restoring hope, dignity and connection.

In a diverse city like Chicago, cultural competence is essential to effective care. My bilingual practice has amplified my ability to connect meaningfully with Hispanic and immigrant populations who often face language, cultural and systemic barriers to mental health access. Through training, supervision and public education, I also promote awareness about trauma, mental illness and destigmatization within minority communities.
