Life in Motion: Med4u - Emergency Heartbeats in Latvia and Around the World

Anna Verhoustinska, Board Member , Med4u

Saving lives, helping reunite families, and being there for those who need support, advice, or a sense of security. For several years, Med4u has been proving that emergency medical assistance can be more mobile, accessible and empathetic – both in Latvia and beyond its borders. From sporting events to repatriation from other continents, the Med4u team not only reacts, but actively prepares, learns, and evolves. This is the story of an organization that combines professional conduct with human ideals.

Filling in the Gaps: Med4u Origins and Mission

“The company was founded with the aim of providing medical assistance outside of medical institutions,” says Anna Verhoustinska, one of the company's board members. “We wanted to make emergency and first aid more accessible, especially for children and people attending sporting events. At that time, there was often a lack of such support in society, and we filled that gap."

From a small initiative, Med4u has grown into a social enterprise offering a wide range of services: emergency assistance at public events, urgent care at home, palliative care, and international patient repatriation.

Preparedness that Saves Lives

One of Med4u's core priorities is continuous training and readiness for any situation. As electric vehicles become increasingly common in sports car racing, it’s essential to understand how to protect oneself, colleagues, and, of course, the driver in the event of an accident. This spring, the company held its third practical training session, where together with rescuers, participants practiced responding to life-threatening scenarios – such as sports accidents, vehicle collisions, and other emergencies. Several simulated scenarios were tested, with specific evacuation tactics developed and rehearsed for both sports car collisions and incidents involving large crowds, such as during cycling event.

“During these training sessions, we work under realistic conditions – with an actual sports car, specific seats, safety systems, and helmets. We simulate situations where patients have fallen in hard-to-reach places and complex positions. We practise carefully removing individuals from their motorcycle suits and helmets,” explains board member and emergency medical assistant Kintija Ivanova-Sovāne. “We repeated immobilization procedures and stopped the severe bleeding. We also discussed the most up-to-date methods for providing better and more effective pain relief at the scene of an accident and, of course, reviewed the principles of completing proper documentation.”
During training, emphasis is placed not only on patient safety, but also on staff protection so that medical professionals can provide assistance without putting themselves at risk. In addition, close cooperation with rescue teams is encouraged to achieve faster and more effective outcomes through logical and precise action.

From the Open-Air Museum to Motocross Tracks

Alongside active training, the Med4u team participates in various public events. This spring, they provided emergency support during Easter celebrations at the Open-Air Museum, the first stage of the Vivus Cycling Marathon, and BMX competitions. A dedicated team of seven Med4u professionals also spent two days ensuring the safety of motocross riders at the Vaidava Cup, held in Ape.

“At each event, potential risks are assessed in order to prepare an appropriate team. We appoint the most experienced medical professional as team leader, review the most common injuries and possible scenarios, and determine how to respond effectively. In addition to the standard equipment, we include extra medical supplies and medications likely to be needed in large quantities for that specific event in our emergency medical transport vehicle,” says Kintija Ivanova-Sovāne. “Regardless of the size or scope of an incident, our goal is to respond swiftly and professionally, wherever help is needed.”
Repatriation Missions: from the Philippines to Egypt

Med4u’s expertise extends far beyond Latvia. The company specializes in medical repatriation – safely transporting patients from foreign countries back to their home nation, whether to a hospital or their residence.
In just one month, the Med4u team helped a patient return home to the Philippines, transporting him from a Latvian hospital in a lying-down position while providing full medical care and handling all necessary documentation so that the patient did not have to worry about anything. Assistance was also provided to a Latvian citizen returning from Tenerife, Spain, after an injury, as well as in a particularly complex mission to evacuate an Estonian family from Egypt following a road traffic accident.

“Every case is different,” says A. Verhoustinska.

  • We work with insurance agents, medical institutions, and medical transport companies to ensure that patients return home in the best possible condition – safely and with dignity

In addition to the countries already mentioned, Med4u has helped people from New Zealand, Russia, Germany, Poland, and Austria.

A Look into the Future

Although everyday life is dynamic and often unpredictable, Med4u clearly knows its direction for development. Plans include expanding emergency care outside of medical institutions, improving palliative care services, and integrating new technologies – such as artificial intelligence tools for more efficient resource planning.
“Palliative care is our newest direction,” says A. Verhoustinska. “There were many initial challenge – both legal and emotional. However, we see that people appreciate this service, and our team is also becoming stronger in this area over time.”

Professionalism with a Human Touch

Med4u is a story about the courage to go against the tide, about choosing to care when others just watch. It’s a story of applying knowledge where it matters most. About help that not only arrives on time, but also shows respect, compassion and responsibility. It is medicine outside the medical institution.
