Fremont, CA: Arcadia (arcadia.io), the premier population health management and health intelligence platform, published the results of its analysis of COVID-19 patients admitted to and discharged from U.S. hospitals in 2020. The key conclusion is that COVID patients have a higher post-discharge mortality rate than the general population – and even higher than discharged patients with a sepsis diagnosis.
In the 90 days after discharge, 15.1 percent of COVID-19 patients die, with 20.6 percent of those classified as very high risk.
COVID-19 caused more deaths within 30 days of discharge than medical admissions or sepsis patients in all risk groups.
Patients discharged for COVID-19 are 2.4 times more likely than those discharged for medical reasons to die during the first 30 days after discharge. For example, they have a 1.6 times higher chance of dying than a patient who has been discharged due to sepsis.
Because both COVID-19 and sepsis are life-threatening diseases, Arcadia compared COVID-19 post-hospital results to sepsis post-hospital outcomes. Sepsis is usually associated with severe bacterial infections, although viral infections, such as COVID-19, can pose a life-threatening threat.
"Arcadia's purpose is to offer our customers with the fabric of data and insights they need to expose and address the needs of patient populations for better treatment and results," said Jacob Hochberg, Arcadia's executive director of customer insights.
