The prosthetics and orthotics industry promotes sustainability by utilizing bio-based plastics and natural fibers, minimizing environmental impact through ethical sourcing and end-of-life management strategies.

FREMONT, CA: The field of prosthetics and orthotics is continuously advancing, aiming to provide individuals with limb loss or weakness the ability to regain mobility and independence. Alongside these advancements, a new focus is emerging: sustainability. Traditional prosthetic and orthotic (P&O) devices often rely on materials and manufacturing processes that leave a significant environmental footprint. Fortunately, innovative companies and researchers are making strides in developing eco-friendly prosthetics, integrating sustainable practices into every step, from design to disposal.

Material Matters: A Shift Towards Renewables

One of the most significant changes is the exploration of eco-friendly materials. Prosthetics traditionally use petroleum-based plastics, a non-renewable resource with a high environmental cost. Bio-based plastics derived from renewable sources like cornstarch or sugarcane are the answer. These materials offer comparable performance while reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Research is also underway on utilizing natural fibers like flax or hemp as reinforcements, potentially replacing traditional synthetic fibers that require energy-intensive production.

Sustainability in manufacturing P&O devices extends far beyond the selection of materials. The entire lifecycle of these devices is meticulously examined to minimize environmental impact at every stage.
