As every project presents its own set of unique challenges, an architect may not be able to supply a standard check list, but hospital leaders should expect that the assigned team of architects has experience with projects that are similar to their own.
Fremont, CA: Due to the numerous changes in healthcare today, including mergers and expansions, technology implementations, value-based care, and changing demographics and patient needs, hospital administrators find themselves contemplating whether they should build on campus, retrofit, or relocate physicians. The decision is complicated, involving factors as varied as cost and the reach of hospitals and health systems in their communities. The following areas should be considered by hospital leaders when planning the expansion of their facilities.
Estimated cost
Hospital leaders should consider all costs, not just the price per square foot for construction, when considering the architect's estimates. When additional costs are factored in, including permits, new heating and cooling systems, and other construction costs, the actual budget for expanding an existing building may far exceed the contractor's bid. To determine what other costs might be involved and what items may not be included in the bid, hospital leaders should speak to all experts - the contractor, architect, electrician, and lawyer.
