For people with mobility issues, getting to and from medical appointments can be a challenge. While some can rely on family, friends, or their communities for transportation, for many the options for a safe, comfortable ride are limited or non-existent. Massachusetts-based Prime Medical Transport is filling this gap with its non-emergency local and long-distance patient transportation service for individuals in skilled nursing facilities, assisted living, memory care units or their own homes.

“We get people to their appointments safely, comfortably and on time, creating a stress-free experience for patients and their families,” says Patricia Curnan, Owner and CEO of Prime Medical Transport. The company also offers transportation for non-medical needs, such as attending social events and doing errands, enabling people with disabilities or seniors needing assistance to enjoy a better quality of life.

A woman-owned business, Prime Medical Transport has earned an exceptional reputation for the compassionate and professional transportation services that it provides on Cape Cod and across the South Coast of Massachusetts. The company offers private pick-ups from homes, nursing facilities, hospitals, rehabilitation centers and other palliative care locations, transporting patients to and from appointments locally, or to Boston and as far away as New York and Pennsylvania. Customers, their personal caregivers or their medical providers reserve rides by phone or via Prime Medical Transport’s website portal, facilitating an easy, hassle-free process.

Prime Medical Transport provides four main types of non-emergency transportation: wheelchair transport; ambulatory transport for customers capable of walking with or without assistance; stretcher transport (accompanied by an EMT professional), and specialized stretcher chair transport. The stretcher chair transport is a new state-of-the-art option that uses the Broda Synthesis Chair.

This versatile chair allows the patient to be transferred from bed to chair while fully reclined and then to sit up during travel, creating a more comfortable ride. The crash-tested chair bridges the gap between a standard wheelchair and a stretcher, Curnan explains. All vehicles in Prime Medical Transport’s fleet are ADA compliant. Each vehicle carries up to two wheelchairs and accommodates two family members or staff accompanying the patient. Portable ramps and power stair chairs are available when needed for transfers.

Caring, Professional Drivers

At the core of Prime Medical Transport’s services is its team of experienced and attentive professionals. “Serving our customer population demands extra care and sensitivity.

Our drivers, EMTs, dispatchers and administrative staff enjoy working with seniors and individuals with special needs to make sure they receive care, respect and compassion while getting to and from their appointments on time,” Curnan says.

The company’s staff members are CPR and First Aid Certified, and the staff includes EMTs and CNAs. All drivers hold certifications in defensive driving and patient sensitivity and undergo extensive background and drug screening. Further, the company holds accreditations from the Non-Emergency Medical Transportation Accreditation Commission (NEMTAC) and The Transportation Alliance for Wheelchair Handling and Securement.

Prime Medical Transport’s genuine commitment to going above and beyond has resulted in consistently high customer satisfaction ratings. One reason is its meticulous attention to scheduling. Prime Medical Transport digs deep into the details of client appointments and coordinates with facilities to ensure that drivers arrive on time for post-appointment pickups. “Customers or patients having to wait hours for their return transport is simply not acceptable. We will be there waiting for you at the arranged time,” Curnan emphasizes.

Customers and their family members often tell Prime Medical Transport how grateful they are for its exceptional services. Curnan shares the story of a nursing home client, a woman with early dementia, who needed a ride to a medical appointment. “Her daughter lives across the country in California. She was worried about her mother’s travel arrangements, partly because her mother was so nervous. Afterward, the daughter called to tell me how caring and attentive the driver was and how she put her mother completely at ease.”

Since its founding in 2013, Prime Medical Transport has completed over 45,000 trips and traveled more than 2,500,000 miles, locally and to Boston hospitals from Cape Cod and from South Shore towns like Duxbury, Plymouth and Norwell. “At Prime Medical Transport, our staff cares deeply about our clients. We do absolutely everything possible to mitigate the challenges of transporting patients so that our clients and their families don’t have to worry about a thing,” Curnan says
