They collaborate closely with architects and designers to streamline the shielding design process to meet their clients’ needs to ensure comprehensive shielding design plans and site-specific radiation protection programs for all types of installations. “We make things simple and efficient for the designers so they can produce high-quality, effective shielding designs with minimal effort,” says Fisher. “Our process for radiation shielding includes a realistic analysis of the shielding requirements for, say, multiple energy linear accelerators.”

After all, linear accelerators use high-energy x-rays to treat cancer and require thorough shielding. The company works closely with designers and architects to ensure efficient use of space for unlocking optimal shielding.

“We can work with clients to provide outside-the-box designs that will help them express their vision for what can be done. We’ve actually been able to work with some architects to design vaults that have skylights or that are open to the outside so that they don’t feel quite as claustrophobic,” mentions Fisher.

All of Therapy Physics’ shielding and design recommendations are in accordance with National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) mandates and applicable local, state, and Joint Commission requirements.

“We have also worked with a number of large proton treatment centers, which is a different technology with their own set of shielding requirements. Our team assisted them in making the best use of their space as well as proper shielding to ensure that everything is safe.”

Fisher is highly knowledgeable on accreditation programs and related regulatory environments. This enables Therapy Physics to keep clients up to date regarding the developments in the field. “I am an active member of the American College of Radiology (ACR)CT accreditation subcommittee that helps define the rules for CT accreditation,” says Fisher. He also serves on the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) on the board of directors. Moreover, their former owner of Therapy Physics is still an active team member with over 30 years of experience in the industry.
