Alicia Bouchard brings a wealth of experience to the realm of healthcare HR, currently serving as the Director of Employee Relations at Royal Mental Health. With over a decade of professional experience, she has navigated various roles, ranging from HR Assistant to Labor Relations Manager to Conflict Resolution Manager. As a certified Human Resources leader, Alicia has proven to be an invaluable asset within the dynamic healthcare landscape, leveraging her extensive expertise to drive meaningful contributions.

Could you please share with our audience the trajectory of your career within the industry, highlighting key roles and responsibilities you undertake on a daily basis?

Throughout my career journey, I have amassed significant expertise across diverse HR domains, encompassing generalist responsibilities, labor relations, and conflict resolution. Presently, my duties entail interpreting and negotiating collective agreements, managing conflicts and grievances, and spearheading process enhancements. Additionally, I am charged with fostering employee engagement and cultivating a positive organizational culture. My professional evolution has seen me ascend from an HR Assistant role to my current position as Director of Employee Relations.

What recent trends and challenges have you observed affecting the industry?

Recent trends and challenges in the healthcare sector have spotlighted a critical issue: the shortage of healthcare personnel. The pandemic-induced upheaval exacerbated backlogs and deficits, intensifying the workload burden on frontline workers and precipitating burnout. Procedural formalities have further strained resources, diverting attention from urgent tasks. Despite the formidable challenges, it is imperative to sustain staff engagement through innovative approaches. A comprehensive review of workplace policies, codes of conduct, and ethical frameworks, particularly among leadership, is essential to fostering a conducive work environment. Furthermore, prioritizing continuous learning and development initiatives for staff is imperative, recognizing education as an ongoing process. Employee well-being, supported by programs promoting work-life balance and mental health, emerges as a pivotal factor in bolstering resilience amidst adversity. Addressing these challenges necessitates a concerted effort towards people-centric leadership, coupled with streamlined and effective protocols.

As a leader, how have you adapted your strategies to navigate these challenges?

In my leadership capacity, I have prioritized robust onboarding processes, particularly for managers, to ensure optimal workforce engagement. Emphasizing educational opportunities and fostering a supportive work-life balance and mental health initiatives have been instrumental. Recognizing employees as the cornerstone of our organization, we continuously evaluate and refine internal processes to promote inclusivity and engagement. Adaptability in leadership style is paramount, with leaders poised to employ diverse approaches in tackling evolving challenges within the healthcare landscape.

What is your vision for the future of the healthcare industry?

The future trajectory of the healthcare sector hinges on addressing human resource complexities, optimizing administrative efficiency, and championing employee engagement. I envision a proliferation of comprehensive onboarding programs for both managers and staff, alongside robust training initiatives for newcomers. Striking a harmonious balance between work commitments and personal life, coupled with prioritizing mental health support for staff, will be pivotal. Additionally, fostering a work environment that reveres employees as the most valuable asset will be imperative. Leadership paradigms are poised to evolve, embracing adaptive strategies to navigate persistent challenges and cultivate a cohesive and motivational workplace culture.

What advice would you offer to your peers in the field?

My advice to fellow industry peers is to recognize employees as the cornerstone of organizational success. Prioritize inclusivity and responsiveness in internal policies and procedures through regular reviews. Investing in comprehensive training for new employees, particularly managers, and facilitating ongoing learning opportunities for all staff members are crucial endeavors. Cultivate a leadership style that is flexible and responsive to evolving circumstances, placing a premium on employee involvement. Establishing a work environment that fosters support and respect for employees is foundational to achieving enduring organizational success.
